Abstract

The batik industry, as part of the creative economy, faces the challenge of adopting safer and more environmentally friendly production processes without diminishing the cultural values embedded in the batik-making tradition. This condition is also faced by Wastra Tamarind, a craft studio in Kampung Padaasih, West Bandung Regency, which still relies on hot wax as its main resist material, resulting in limitations in occupational safety, energy consumption, and technique innovation and product diversification. This Community Service (PkM) program aims to improve the knowledge, technical skills, creativity, and capacity of the partner through the application of a resist material based on tamarind seed flour (gutta tamarind) as a more environmentally friendly cold-resist alternative. The program was carried out through a community empowerment approach involving socialization, needs identification, conceptual training, demonstration, hands-on practice, technical mentoring, as well as monitoring and evaluation. The results show that participants gained an understanding of the characteristics and use of gutta tamarind, were able to process and apply the material in the batik-making process, and demonstrated increased creativity in exploring motifs and producing batik works based on gutta tamarind. The program also encouraged awareness of safer, more energy-efficient, and environmentally friendly production practices, while opening opportunities for textile craft product diversification. Program outputs in the form of a training module, creative batik works, and strengthened technical capacity of the partner show that local material innovation can serve as an appropriate technology alternative supporting the development of craft studios and the sustainable preservation of the batik tradition
