Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy

Jurnal Pengabdian Pendidikan Masyarakat recognizes that advances in artificial intelligence (AI) technology can provide support at various stages of research and scientific manuscript preparation. The use of this technology can assist with literature searches, information organization, data analysis, language editing, and improvements to manuscript structure and clarity of presentation.

Although AI technologies, including large language models (LLMs) and generative AI, offer various benefits in supporting academic activities, their use cannot replace authors' intellectual responsibility, critical judgment, and integrity. Therefore, Jurnal Pengabdian Pendidikan Masyarakat establishes this AI policy as a guideline for authors, reviewers, and editors to ensure that the use of such technologies is responsible, transparent, and consistent with the ethical principles of research and scholarly publishing.

1. Permitted Use of AI

Jurnal Pengabdian Pendidikan Masyarakat permits the use of AI tools to support research activities and manuscript preparation, provided that such use does not compromise the originality of the work, violate academic ethics, or transfer scientific responsibility away from the authors. Permitted uses include:

a.   Language Editing and Proofreading. AI may be used to assist in improving grammar, spelling, punctuation, and clarity of expression without altering the scientific substance of the ideas presented by the authors.

b.  Literature Search and Reference Management. AI-based tools may be used to support literature searches, reference organization, and the preparation of citations and reference lists. Authors remain responsible for verifying the authenticity, relevance, and accuracy of every source used.

c.    Manuscript Similarity Checking. Text similarity detection tools may be used as supporting instruments to identify parts of a manuscript that require further examination. The results of such checks must not be used as the sole basis for determining whether plagiarism has occurred.

d.   Data Analysis and Presentation Support. AI may be used to assist with data processing, exploration, preliminary interpretation, and presentation. However, authors must ensure that the analytical methods employed are appropriate, the reported results are consistent with the original data, and the interpretations presented are scientifically justifiable.

2. Prohibited Use of AI

The use of AI in research and scholarly publishing must be subject to limitations designed to protect academic integrity and ensure the reliability of research findings. Accordingly, the following practices are prohibited:

a.     Replacement of Authors' Intellectual Contributions. AI must not be used as a substitute for the substantive role of authors in formulating research problems, developing scientific arguments, determining and explaining research methods, interpreting findings, and formulating conclusions. Authors must retain intellectual control over the entire manuscript and remain responsible for the scientific contributions presented.

b.  Fabrication, Manipulation, and Misrepresentation of Data. AI must not be used to create data, fabricate research results, improperly alter findings, manipulate evidence, or generate information that is unsupported by verifiable data and sources.

c.  Misuse of Information and Scholarly Sources. Authors are prohibited from using AI to generate fictitious references, cite unverifiable sources, present inaccurate information as fact, or engage in other practices that violate the principles of academic honesty.

d.   Violation of Rights and Confidentiality. The use of AI must not result in copyright infringement, misuse of personal data, disclosure of confidential information, or violations of confidentiality requirements applicable to research and editorial processes.

3. Requirements and Responsibilities for the Use of AI

Authors who use AI in research or manuscript preparation must comply with the following requirements:

a.  Verification and Validation of AI Outputs. Authors must critically examine all AI-generated outputs used in the manuscript, including the accuracy of information, validity of references, appropriateness of interpretations, and consistency with scientific evidence. Authors bear full responsibility for the final content of the submitted manuscript.

b.   Transparent Disclosure of AI Use. The use of generative AI that contributes to the preparation or development of the substantive content of a manuscript must be clearly disclosed in the section designated by the journal. At a minimum, the disclosure must identify the AI tool used, the purpose of its use, and the parts of the manuscript or stages of the work in which AI assistance was employed. The use of AI limited to spelling correction or language editing must also be disclosed in accordance with the journal's requirements.

c.   Appropriate Acknowledgment and Citation. Where relevant, authors must provide information about the AI tools or software used in accordance with applicable citation requirements. The use of AI does not replace the obligation to cite primary scholarly sources that underpin the research arguments and findings.

d.   Prohibition on Listing AI as an Author. AI tools must not be listed as authors or as parties responsible for a manuscript because they cannot fulfill the academic and publication responsibilities required of human authors.

4. Authors' Responsibilities

Authors bear full responsibility for the originality, accuracy, and integrity of the entire manuscript, including any sections prepared with AI assistance. Authors must ensure the accuracy of all references to primary sources by directly checking the relevant official sources.

5. Responsibilities of Reviewers and Editors

a.    Confidentiality of the Peer-Review Process. Reviewers and editors are prohibited from uploading manuscripts, any part of their content, or peer-review reports to public AI tools, as such actions may breach the confidentiality of the peer-review process and violate authors' rights.

b.   Human Responsibility for Substantive Evaluation. The substantive assessment of a manuscript must be conducted personally by the reviewer. AI may only be used to assist in improving the language of a review report already prepared by the reviewer, without including any manuscript content.

c.    Use of Editorial Support Tools. Editors may use text similarity checking or AI detection tools as supplementary sources of information. However, editorial decisions must remain based on human judgment and consideration.

6. Editorial Review and Oversight

All manuscripts submitted to Jurnal Pengabdian Pendidikan Masyarakat, whether prepared with or without AI assistance, will undergo editorial evaluation and peer review according to the same scientific and publication ethics standards. Editors are authorized to assess whether the use of AI complies with the journal's policy, request clarification or additional disclosure from authors, and conduct further investigations where there are indications of misconduct. Where AI detection tools are used, their results must not serve as the sole basis for concluding that a violation has occurred, as such results require careful interpretation and consideration of relevant evidence.

7. Policy Review and Updates

Jurnal Pengabdian Pendidikan Masyarakat will periodically review its AI policy in response to technological developments, changes in research practices, and evolving standards of publication ethics. These reviews aim to ensure that the policy remains relevant, proportionate, and consistent with the principles of academic integrity and best practices in scholarly publishing.
